Teacher Grants Awarded for  2017-18 

     The Byng Excellence in Education Foundation recently awarded grants to eight teachers of the Byng School district for the 2017-2018 school year.  All three school sits were recognized.        

      " Projection Scenery," submitted by Kellye Griffin, will bring Byng School’s theatre department up-to-date by integrating a wide-rear projection screen, a bright wide-throw projector, and scenic projections for the stagecraft curriculum and the drama productions. 

     " Drumming Without Drums," submitted by Laura Smith will  give students the opportunity to jam with buckets and other “instruments" to discover the joy of creating music and the fun of using homemade (or found “instruments”) to do so.  

   " Hey, Alexa," submitted by Luann Fuller, will be used to purchase an Amazon Echo and magazine subscriptions to Zoobooks, National Geographic for Kids, Boys' Life, American Girl and Sports Illustrated for Kids.  The Amazon Echo can provide answers to many of their questions, provide current comparisons, and even translate phrases into other languages.  

    " Technology for Special Needs," submitted by Shelley Howell, will allow for the purchase of Chromebooks for students in her classroom who need  varied resources to enhance and encourage independence. 

   " Boogie Fever," a collaborative grant submitted by Jerica Reed and Debbie Carter, will allow their second and third graders to use a "Boogie Board," which is a lightweight LCD electronic device with a writing screen much like a tiny white board. It requires no plug in,  no paper or pencil.  With these, students can  practice math facts, spelling words, short stories, creative writings, and handwriting.  

   " Francis Running and Mileage Club," a collaborative grant submitted by Genieve Fleet and Lisa Nickell, encourages students to participate in the Francis Running & Mileage Club.  Students will have the opportunity to run or walk as much as they like during their recess time and keep track of it on the EZ Tally app.

   As Byng's 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year,  Laura Smith was awarded a special grant.

   During each school year, B.E.E.F.  works with the school, community and alumni to raise money for teacher grants and student scholarships.  The foundation posts events of interest on the Byng School website, Facebook, and Twitter.

Byng Foundation Awards Teacher Grants for 2015

Byng Excellence in Education Foundation (BEEF) recently awarded grants totaling almost $5,000 to Byng teachers.  The grant winners and their projects were recognized on January 26 at the Bill Koller Field House during the halftime of the Byng-Tecumseh girls' basketball game.

The teacher grant program rewards classroom teachers for providing outstanding learning environments for students on the campuses of Byng, Francis, and Homer.

Ada, OK, 2-4-2016— Byng Excellence in Education Foundation (BEEF) recently awarded grants totaling almost $5,000 to Byng teachers.
 
The teacher grant program rewards classroom teachers for providing outstanding learning environments for students on the campuses of Byng, Francis, and Homer.
 
The following grant winners and their projects were recognized on January 26 at the Bill Koller Field House during halftime of the Byng-Tecumseh girls’ basketball game: Kelley Griffin’s “Mad About Stagecraft” will allow high school drama students to learn the art of stagecraft and to build sets for future productions; Melissa Coats and Kristen Finley will develop “Music Discovery Centers” at Homer, relating to listening, puppetry, composition, iPad smartboard music activities, storytelling with instruments, imaginative expression and movement; Jayci Harris and Sunny Swopes use of “Robots for Learning” will help Homer students collaborate with other classrooms to make predictions, communicate observations, explore cause and effect, and the use of technology. Jessica Reeves will “Make Classrooms Come Alive” at Homer by giving students hands-on learning experience by hatching chicken, butterfly, duck, geese, and turkey eggs; Leslie Hamilton’s “Time to Create and Innovate” project will focus on learning tools and materials for math and science in her Francis elementary classroom; Byng Junior High physical science teacher Allison Shannon will enable students to create molecular models using a model kit for “Seeing Is Believing”; Clint McGaha and Staci Capps will use funding in their high school physics and video production classrooms to purchase a DJI Video Recording Quadcopter Drone for “High Flying” concepts such as aerodynamics, friction, and practical recordings. Carla Husband’s proposal “Take Me to the River” will utilize a mini stream table for investigating the dynamics of erosion and deposition in her Byng Junior High science classroom. 
 
The 2015 teacher grants were awarded based on creativity, innovation, the number of students to be reached and the longevity of material requested.  As a follow-up, recipients will provide reports back to BEEF this May.
 
During the award presentation, Byng’s District Teacher of the Year Staci Capps also received a $500 standing grant which the foundation awards annually.

2015-16 Scholarship Winners

     At the awards assembly May, 2016, the Byng Excellence in Education Foundation awarded $500 scholarships to five seniors. Students recognized for this honor were the following: Megan Ross, Leandrea Kellogg, Matthew Huddleston, Ryan Smith, and Caleb Scroggins.

     Presenting the scholarships on behalf of the foundation was Darryl Hatcher, board member. The Scholarship Committee includes the following: chairperson Raeanne Carson and board members Mark Davis, Carol Williamson and Betty Allred.

2015 Scholarship Recipients

On Tuesday, May 19, 2015, seven outstanding Byng seniors each received a $500 cash scholarship provided by the Byng Education in Excellence Foundation.  Students receiving the honor were Montana Sellers, Brady Sorrels, Shyanna Douglas, Kaylan West, Crystal Tovar, Elizabeth O'Grady and Dineh Bohan.

Raeanne Carson, chairperson of the Student Scholarship Committee Chair for the foundation, awarded the scholarships to the recipients at the Byng senior awards program.  Mr. Lowrance, the high school principal, spoke of his own personal reflection of the year concerning these and all the other hard working, motivated seniors, saying so many graduating students made a positive impact on him.

Successful fundraising and donations enabled the foundation to provide two additional scholarships to seniors this school year.

BEEF BBQ Fundraiser

BEEF Gets a Big Thank You!

At the October board meeting of the Byng Excellence in Education Foundation (BEEF), Byng Superintendent Todd Crabtree and Assistant Superintendent Bill Nelson presented a signed thank you banner from Byng teachers and staff in appreciation for BEEF’s funding the “We Are Pirates” t-shirts.  As a token of inspiration, unity and commendation, BEEF provided the necessary funding so that every Byng teacher and support staff member could receive a shirt. Small Grant Program

Funds received are disbursed annually through student scholarships and our Small Grant Program for teachers.  The Small Grant Program is a unique way to provide additional academic opportunities for our children.  It allows grants to be awarded to teachers for the implementation of innovative ideas in the classroom for which federal school funding is not available.  The grant program also provides recognition to teachers for particularly creative endeavors in the classroom.

What do we look for in grant proposals? 

The following categories are more likely to be funded:

• Innovative programs -- also described as "first-time", "unique", "pilot programs".
• Music, art, language or non-academic extended learning programs.
• Specialty equipment or technology.
• Projects that provide an avenue to explore, develop and refine ideas for improving the educational experience for our students.

The following categories are less likely to be funded:

• Projects that fund primarily consumable materials and/or transportation costs.
• Programs that are a continuation of an event/experience that was established in a prior school year.
• Grants with minimal creativity, thought process, etc.

“Walk of Fame” Project

We also sell bricks to alumni, students and educators to include on our “Walk of Fame” which is located on the south side of the high school at the flag pole. The bricks are $25 each. The costs to engrave the bricks are paid by the Foundation and all labor and materials to complete the project is donated by members of B.E.E.F. and school personnel.
